Household Item: Sewing Machine
Description: Portable sewing machine and case used in Muntau, Russia by Maria (Wiebe) Toews. She purchased the machine when she was 18 years old, in 1897. She took a sewing course, was a seamstress for the hospital in Muntau, and also sewed for others. After her marriage to Kornelius A. Toews she did all the sewing for her family. Her daughters all learned to sew on this machine. The machine was able to handle all fine sewing, heavy material and even leather.
The case is of dark wood with a keyhole on the right side near bottom. It has ornamentally carved wood corners, painted design on the front/back of the case. Six larger cracks, several scratches and small hole on top of case when item was acquired.
The machine is black with silver trim. It rests on wooden platform with worn-off checkered border design and has a hand crank on right side of machine. There is a silver plaque with coat-of-arms emblem on machine arm.
Extra pieces include one silver needle, a box of 25 pieces spare parts for the machine, and a card which tells Maria (Wiebe) Toews background story as above.

Description: White linen cloth from the 1920’s, Tiege, Molotschna Colony, Ukraine. Embroidery done by a maid in Jacob H. and Elsie Neufeld Janzen household. The Janzen family lived in Tiege–Orloff where Janzen was head of the Mädchen Schule. After they came to the Kitchener Waterloo area he was elected Bishop of the Ontario Mennonite Churches. In this capacity he became well known in the Essex-Kent area. The cloth contains several rust stains.
