Case: Bloodletting kit

Description: Wooden case containing a scarificator, nine glass cups, and two small glass jars. Some scratch marks on light-coloured wooden surface, three empty compartments out of a total of 15.  Measures 11cm high, 35cm wide.  Used in Russia to reduce high blood pressure and alleviate arthritic pain by Margareta Friesen Wiens Driedger Warkentin, grandmother of Anna Wiens Tiessen (donor).

Year: Used in the 1860's in Russia.

Case: Diaper bag

Description: Black leather bag with silver coloured clasp and handle. Cover of beige cloth, red trim, red embroidery... "zieh froehlich hinaus - kehr gluecklich nach Haus." (Translation – “travel away cheerfully and return home happily”)

Buttoned tab closures at ends.  Measures 35cm long, 30cm high, 16cm wide at bottom, 10cm wide at top. Used by Agatha Dueck Wiens, wife of Henry B. Wiens.

Case: For carrying headdress

Description: Circular wooden box with lid used for carrying headdress (Haube) to church or when going visiting. Leather strap with buckle to close over lid, broken off at one end. Measures 27cm wide, 15.5 cm high, 40cm around. Belonged to Mrs. Warkentin (Mrs. Henry B. Wiens mother)

Case: Midwife case

Description: Brown leather case, metal frame, leather inside, very worn. Lock is broken and case does not close tightly. The case contains a curved scissor with rounded tip, forceps, a hollow curved instrument, metal box with lid (3.5cm.X7cm.X2.5cm.) containing 2 vials and cotton, metal box with lid(4cm.X8.5cm.X2cm.) containing a hypodermic syringe and assorted needles, rounded metal box (soap dish?) (96.5cm.X9cm.X4cm.) with hinged lid, rectangular metal case or box with lid (10cm.X13cm.X3.5cm.), two metal canisters (10cm. diameter X 20cm.) with 9 8mm holes around top & bottom, both top and bottom lids removable and can be rotated to open or close the holes. All metal items appear to be stainless steel. Used by Mrs. Sara Matthies (nee Retzlaff) 1910-1924, upper and lower villages of Kalantarowka, Russkowaja in Stavropol district.

This professional nursing case and contents belonged to Mrs. Sara Matthies (nee Retzlaff) - daughter of Johannes and Katherine Retzlaff of Gnadenfeld and later Kalantarowka, Caucasus.  Sara studied midwifery and some medicine in Riga, Latvia after completing studies in Gnadenfeld.  She supplied midwife as well as some medical services in both the Upper and Lower villages (Oberdorf and Unterdorf) of Kalantarowka, Russkowaja in Stavropol district - circa 1910-1924.

In 1924 Gerhard and Sara Matthies came to Manitoba, Canada with their 3 remaining children:

     Evangeline (Mrs. Vernon Neuschwander), Goshen Indiana

     John, living at Belleville, ON

     Erna (Mrs. Cornelius Hamm), RR #1 Kingsville, ON

Sara Matthies died in 1926 in Gnadental, Manitoba.  In 1930 the Matthies family moved to Ontario.


 

Case: Passport Purse

Description: black leather, dark green cloth inside trim.

Foldup style with snap closure on front outside. One large pocket, two smaller.  Contains passports, ID cards, health cards, border pass, birth certificates etc. of Abram and Margaret Rempel (992.79.19a-b)

43.5cm when open, 33.5 cm wide.

Case: Mathematical\drafting set

Description: Black leather case (27cm x 12cm) with fifteen piece drafting set. Used for engineering and drafting purposes by Dietrich Isaak, Centralschule teacher in St. Petersburg, Russia, father of Nickolai, grandfather of Edith Isaak Tiessen, great grandfather of Douglas Tiessen.

Case: Suitcase

Description: This suitcase belonged to Margaret’s mother, Margaretha Friesen Driedger (1895–1984 – (also mother

to Agatha Neufeld, Cornelius Driedger, John Driedger,

Abe Driedger) who came from Russia to Manitoba in 1924 and from Manitoba they came to Essex County. This suitcase is presumed to have travelled with her from Russia.
