The Great Oak near the island of Chortitza in southern Russia (Ukraine) was sais to be over 700- years old when this photo was taken by the donor in 1988. It was a landmark and gathering spot for the native Cossaks and later for the Mennonite immigrants. It has died in the years since this photo was taken. Acorns brought back to Canada by tourists have produced a number of thriving young trees.
